This more than 3000 year old hilltop town sits almost at the centre of the province of Cádiz, overlooking La Janda, the countryside and the coast. Its elevated position and road connections make it an ideal base for exploring the region. 
This is not a road trip where you are constantly packing and unpacking.
It is a week based in one of Andalusia's hidden gems, with a different day trip every day.
And that changes everything.

Day 1 
Before exploring further afield, start with Medina Sidonia itself.
Give yourself a day to discover the town that will be your home for the week.
Walk through the historic centre and explore its extraordinary layers of history. Roman remains, medieval streets, churches, old walls and archaeological sites tell the story of a town that has occupied this strategic hilltop for thousands of years.
Visit the Roman archaeological complex, wander through the old streets and climb towards the Cerro del Castillo.
And then stop. Look at the view.
From Medina Sidonia's elevated position, the landscape opens towards the Cádiz countryside and the coast. 
Try the town's famous alfajores, perhaps with a coffee, and let your first evening unfold without an itinerary.

Day 2 – Cádiz: A day by the Atlantic
After breakfast in Medina Sidonia, you’ll drive to Cádiz – a journey of about 45 minutes.
There’s no need to check into a hotel. No suitcases. No schedule except your own.
Explore the old town, stroll through the narrow alleyways and across the elegant squares, visit the cathedral and discover the neighbourhoods that have sprung up around the Atlantic.
Then let the sea be your guide.
Stroll along the seafront promenade and continue towards La Caleta, Cádiz’s wonderfully atmospheric city beach.
Enjoy lunch featuring the delights of the sea – fresh fish, seafood and the famous ‘tortillitas de camarones’.
Spend the afternoon exploring or simply sitting by the Atlantic.
And when the day draws to a close, drive back to Medina Sidonia.

Day 3 – Vejer de la Frontera: The white village and the coast
Today, the road takes you south for about 30 minutes’ drive to Vejer de la Frontera.
Vejer is one of the beautiful white villages in the province of Cádiz, with whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways, hidden courtyards and magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.
Spend the morning simply strolling around.
Discover the old town. Explore its historic alleyways. Take a break for a coffee or lunch and enjoy the village’s laid-back pace.
Then carry on towards the Atlantic coast.
The beaches around El Palmar offer a completely different atmosphere: wide sandy beaches, dunes, the surf and a vast horizon.
Enjoy the afternoon by the sea.
Then return to Medina Sidonia.
As evening approaches, drive back up to your accommodation on the hill.
Another day full of discoveries. Another evening in Medina.

Day 4
Today, head inland for another 30 minutes drive.
Your destination is Jerez de la Frontera, the city of sherry, horses and flamenco.
Spend the day discovering its historic centre and, of course, its famous bodegas.
Learn how the region's sherry wines are made and take time to taste them in their place of origin.
Jerez also offers a fascinating insight into Andalusian equestrian culture. The relationship between the Andalusian horse, its rider and the traditions of the region is deeply rooted in the city's identity.
Have a leisurely lunch.
Explore a little more.
Perhaps find some flamenco in the afternoon.
And then — rather than staying overnight in Jerez — take the road back to Medina Sidonia.
The great advantage of having a base is that the day can be completely devoted to discovering Jerez.
Your evening remains your own.

Day 5 
Today is the biggest excursion of the week. The drive to Seville takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Leave Medina Sidonia in the morning and make the journey to Andalusia's great capital.
Begin with the magnificent Real Alcázar, then explore the cathedral and the Giralda.
Afterwards, wander through Santa Cruz.
Stop for tapas.
Visit the spectacular Plaza de España.
Walk through María Luisa Park.
And, most importantly, leave some time simply to experience Seville.
Sit in a square. Have a coffee. Watch the city move around you.
Seville is a city that rewards atmosphere as much as sightseeing.
Then, in the late afternoon or evening, leave the capital behind.
The road takes you back towards Cádiz province.
And eventually, the lights of Medina Sidonia appear on the hill.
You return to your own room.
Your suitcase has never moved.

Day 6
Today you’ll drive for about an hour towards Tarifa, stopping off first at my personal hidden gem – Bolonia.
A vast, largely unspoilt beach with an impressive shifting sand dune.
Right on the beach lie the ruins of the Roman town of Baelo Claudia.
This is exactly the sort of place that makes this trip so special:
Roman town + Atlantic Ocean + dunes + mountains + an almost surreal landscape.
The coastal landscape around Tarifa and Bolonia is among the province’s most distinctive beaches; Valdevaqueros and Los Lances are also well-known for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
In the afternoon, you’ll continue on to Tarifa.
Tarifa is different from the rest of Andalusia.
This is where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet, Africa lies just a few kilometres away, and the wind is practically part of the townscape.
The old town, with its white houses, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Then head down to the sea.
On a clear day, you can see the North African coast from Tarifa.
Take your time. Don’t just take photos. Sit on the beach. Walk through the dunes.
Gaze out to sea. And at some point, realise that Africa lies on the horizon.
Afterwards, it’s back to Medina Sidonia.

Day 7 - leads you through the Sierra de Cadiz east to the province of Malaga

Medina Sidonia → Sierra de Cádiz → Zahara de la Sierra → Setenil de las Bodegas → Ronda → Málaga province.

The landscape gradually changes from the open countryside of La Janda to the dramatic limestone peaks and valleys of the Sierra de Cádiz.
Then come the famous white villages.
Zahara de la Sierra
One of the great highlights is Zahara de la Sierra, spectacularly positioned beneath the mountains and above its turquoise reservoir.
This is Andalusia at its most cinematic: white houses climbing the hillside, a castle above them and mountains stretching into the distance.
Take your time. Have lunch. Enjoy the view. Then continue through the Sierra.
Setenil de las Bodegas
The next unforgettable stop is Setenil de las Bodegas.
This village is unlike almost anywhere else in Andalusia.
Rather than simply building houses on the mountain, generations of inhabitants built them into and beneath the enormous rock formations.
Walk through the streets where the rock itself becomes part of the architecture.
It is one of those places that makes you stop and ask how such a landscape became a village.

Ronda — The Perfect Finale

And then the road leads naturally to Ronda.
The landscape opens.
The town appears dramatically above its famous gorge.
The Puente Nuevo spans the Tajo, connecting the old and new parts of the city, while the surrounding mountains stretch towards Málaga province.
After seven days based in Medina Sidonia, this is the perfect finale.
You have travelled from the Atlantic coast to Cádiz, from white villages to Jerez, from Seville to Tarifa — and now from the Cádiz countryside into the mountains of Andalusia.
And Ronda becomes the gateway to the next chapter:
